Wednesday, November 20, 2024, 1:30 p.m. – 5:45 p.m. / FIAP Auditorium, 30 rue Cabanis, 75014 Paris. It is possible to follow the conference and ask questions remotely. Simultaneous translation in French and English will be available. A Soil Fresco (Fresque du sol) will be presented in person from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

In a context of growing awareness of the important role of soils in ecosystems and the dangers associated with their degradation, scientists are proposing different conceptual frameworks to define soil quality. These frameworks can cover notions of quality, fertility, health, threat, security, function, service, etc. But what indicators are these notions based on, and how can they be used in public policy? Few studies have taken a comprehensive approach to soil quality indicators and their operational relevance across all contexts and land uses (agricultural, forestry, urban, natural).

This study, conducted by INRAE's Department of Collective Scientific Expertise, Foresight, and Studies (DEPE), provides an overview of scientific findings that lay the foundations for a soil quality indicator system. It highlights the conditions for its relevance and effectiveness, as well as the challenges that must be overcome for its implementation. It identifies the resources already available for better preservation of soil quality by all users, and research avenues to develop knowledge, reduce uncertainty, and improve its adoption.

* The conference will be preceded by a presentation, the Soil Fresco (Fresque du sol), a fun and collaborative tool that aims to disseminate a common language on how soils function and the challenges related to their preservation: 11 a.m.–12 p.m. (limited seating).

Lunch is available at 12:00 p.m. on site, at the participants' expense (€18.50 at the Fiap cafeteria).

Unless you object, your email address will be kept to invite you to future DEPE conferences.
