Policy Briefs

Policy briefs are short, concise documents designed to convey research findings in a clear and accessible way to a non-academic audience. They get straight to the point, present analyses of specific issues and may set out recommendations to inform the decisions of decision-makers in the public, private or civil society sectors.

On this page, you can download the policy briefs produced by the FairCarboN projects:

PREFALIM - Agroecology: a viable and sustainable solution for feeding local communities, France and Europe

The research presented here challenges a common misconception: organic farming is not inherently less productive than conventional farming. Given a specific soil and climate context, organic and conventional farms follow the same yield curve – nitrogen fertilisation – indicating the potential for ecological intensification of organic farming. Using a modelling approach that tests coherent reconfigurations of agri-food systems (reducing animal protein, reintegrating arable farming and livestock farming, and long crop rotations incorporating legumes), we demonstrate that it is possible to halve several major impacts (greenhouse gases, ammonia, nitrogen surpluses) whilst strengthening food sovereignty. These findings are directly in line with FAIRCarboN’s aim to explore robust pathways towards the sustainability of agri-food systems.

PREFALIM - Agricultural markets, price adjustments and the redistribution of gains and losses linked to climate change

This policy brief explores how changes in crop yields linked to climate change influence land use, production volumes and the prices of agricultural commodities traded globally. One of the key lessons is that it is essential to take price adjustments into account, as international markets redistribute the winners and losers of climate change, to the benefit of exporting countries – an aspect often overlooked in analyses focused on agricultural production. Based on recent empirical modelling work, this document aims to support and inform policy decisions and strategies for agricultural and trade adaptation by providing a concise and accessible tool to facilitate dialogue between scientists and decision-makers.
