Did you know? Grasslands, which cover 40% of the Earth’s land surface and two‑thirds of all agricultural land, store about 20% of the world’s soil organic carbon!

The 2026 Annual Days of the PEPR SAMS (for Food Systems, Microbiomes and Health) were held on 31 March and 1 April 2026 in Paris.

Kenji Fujisaki and his colleagues have published a data paper in the journal Scientific Data. This first publication led to the release of an INRAE press statement, as well as an article in the newspaper La République du Centre. The data paper presents an unprecedented dataset designed to simulate changes in soil‑carbon stocks in cultivated soils.

Cover crops grown between main crops, as well as intercropping systems, help reduce nitrate and pesticide leaching in low‑input agricultural systems.

FairCarboN is a partner of the STICS 2026 event — a generic soil–plant model used to analyse, assess and design agro‑ecosystems.

Between 12 and 17 July, the annual international geochemistry congress — the Goldschmidt Conference — will take place in Montréal. This year, Pierre Anschutz, coordinator of the CABESTAN project, is organising a session on the coastal and marine carbon cycle. The session is entitled: “Benthic biogeochemistry, alkalinity, ocean hypoxia, acidification and AI: exploring ocean change” and is held in honour of Alfonso Mucci.

The European Space Agency (ESA) is striving to better understand our planet through innovative Earth‑observation missions. Among them, the FLEX mission (Fluorescence Explorer) plays a central role, focusing on plant health and the way vegetation interacts with the atmosphere.

Rémi Cardinael, leader of Axis 3 of FairCarboN on biomass production and use, and contributor to the CrosyeN project, will be one of the Lead Authors for the AFOLU/soils chapter of the next IPCC report, to be released in 2027. This nomination recognises his expertise in soil carbon dynamics, agroecological transitions, and land‑based climate mitigation, and highlights the growing contribution of French research to the work of the IPCC.
