Impact4Sol : THE global data platform on soil carbon is coming out of the ground !

The project is the brainchild of one of the community's researchers, Julien Demenois, an ecologist at CIRAD (UR AIDA) and head of the FairCarboN plant biomass development and mobilisation unit.

A third of the world's soils are degraded and lack organic matter. Soil carbon, which is a major component of this organic matter, is crucial to soil health. This issue is central to the challenges of food security and climate change mitigation and adaptation. To encourage cooperation and the sharing of knowledge on soil carbon on a global scale, a new platform, Impact4Soil, has been launched.

There was an urgent need to centralise all the knowledge on soil carbon,’ explains Julien Demenois. That's why we designed the Impact4Soil platform, to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and inform policy-makers and farmers with scientific data’.

Impact4Soil covers all types of soil and, thanks to its comprehensive and integrated approach, enables users to :

➡ geospatialise soil organic carbon stocks: their changes, inflows and outflows
➡ compare the results with existing literature by country;
➡ discover new perspectives to enrich their work;
➡ increase the visibility of research partnerships, activities and results.

Created as part of the ORCasa project, a Horizon Europe programme project coordinated by INRAE, Impact4Soil brings together international stakeholders working on soil carbon sequestration.
The platform provides easy access to data and meta-analyses on soil carbon, best agronomic and forestry practices, and trends in soil carbon stocks. It also fosters synergies and collaboration between researchers, farmers, foresters and policy-makers.
