How can agroecology be rolled out more widely?

The work carried out by PREFALIM and SLAM-B shows that agroecological systems have the technical potential to reconcile food production with significant improvements in environmental performance across a wide range of contexts. So why has the transition to agroecology not already taken place?

The problem undoubtedly lies elsewhere, notably in the socio-economic logic of the upstream-downstream supply chains within which agriculture operates, in farmers’ working conditions and pay, and in the political influence over public policy wielded by the actors who control these sectors.
However, this socio-economic context also provides further incentive to foster new hopes, all the more so in the current climate of an ‘energy war’ and soaring input prices. This is precisely the significance of exploring possible futures through scientific approaches, whilst giving the imagination the full scope it deserves.
