Résumé

Terrestrial carbon dioxide removal (CDR) - Insights from the CDRterra program

To achieve greenhouse gas neutrality by mid-century, we need to complement deep emission reduction by permanently removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Options for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) range from conventional methods such as reforestation or agroforestry to marine methods and technical systems for capturing CO2 directly from the air. However, all options have trade-offs and risks, including competition for land or energy or negative implications for biodiversity. If carefully designed and governed, these approaches can also deliver co-benefits such as enhanced ecosystem resilience and new income streams. This lecture will present results from phase 1 of CDRterra, the German research program on carbon dioxide removal, and discuss the current state of CDR and how to assess its risks and opportunities in order to design a responsible portfolio of CDR measures.
