Lateral carbon transfers play a significant role in the carbon balance of terrestrial ecosystems. These transfers can be linked to the loss of biomass through grazing or the harvesting of wood, grass and crops, but also to the leaching, erosion and re-deposition of soil organic carbon. Lateral transfers of carbon via biological production or transport with the load of rivers are becoming important on a regional to global scale.

Quantifying these lateral carbon transfers and their impact on the terrestrial carbon budget remains difficult, but is necessary to better constrain the terrestrial carbon budget and better understand its response to historical, current and future disturbances.

This workshop brings together leading researchers working on these lateral carbon transfers at local to global scales, including experimentalists and modellers.

The aim of this workshop is to provide an overview of current research on this subject and to encourage interdisciplinary exchange between presenters and with the public.
